What To Look For When Purchasing An Upright Bike
So, you’re looking to buy an upright exercise bike? Only issue is, when you search for your dream bike on amazon, you are greeted by over 100 results. This begs the question; how do I know what to look for? Well, you’re in good hands. We’re going to spell it out for you and make your life so much easier. By the time you’ve finished reading, you’ll know exactly what you need to look for in order satisfy your cardiovascular needs with an upright bike.
Why an upright bike?
There are typically 3 different types of exercise bikes located at most gyms and the good news is that they are all available for non-commercial use too. Indoor cycles, (spin bikes) upright bikes and recumbent bikes. Each serve a different purpose and will be suitable for different needs. Upright bikes are designed only for sitting and the handlebars are positioned to allow you to do so comfortably, without the need to lean forward. Therefore, these bikes are meant more for stamina and endurance sessions rather than interval training. This doesn’t mean HIIT isn’t possible because you can still pedal very fast, you just can’t leverage the additional momentum from standing and driving into the pedals. They are the most suitable out of the three for beginners and have a high comfortability rating.
Who are upright bikes suitable for?
As previously mentioned, upright bikes are ideal for fitness novices and people looking to start the first chapter of their home fitness pursuits. The simplicity of the design and comfortable, lightweight structure make for a very beginner friendly piece of kit. So, if you’re overwhelmed by the various exercise bike choices in front of you then an upright bike is a safe bet to get you underway.
Upright bikes tend to be a cheaper option across the board than some of the other styles. Therefore, if you’re not looking to break the bank then this might be a suitable option. Despite the smaller price tag, the quality of your workout will not reflect this and a great bout of cardiovascular exercise can still be achieved. The JF100 is a prime example of an upright bike that packs quite a punch whilst also being one of the cheapest of its kind on the market. Earning it’s spot as the number 1 exercise bike of 2022 according to a consumer favourite review site – ExpertReviews
Endurance over HIIT
Due to the upright position users have to adopt to use these bikes, it rules out the ability to stand up and pedal more aggressively. This means they are more suitable for individuals looking to burn calories over a longer period of time at a lower intensity. This in itself comes with a variety of benefits: Watching television or looking at a tablet is very much accessible and easy to do. Many of us need some form of distraction in order to get our cardio done and this type of exercise bike is a perfect accommodator of this. The JF600 PRO has a built in smart device mount which allows you to connect your device and utilize applications (such as kino maps) that provide geo-located videos that can be synced to your workouts.
What to look for?
As with any piece of exercise equipment, the monitor and applicable readouts are important to your progression and general experience when exercising. Therefore, it is important to consider what information you want to be aware of. For example, calories burned, distance travelled, RPM etc. Furthermore, you might want to incorporate workout programs into your routine. The JF600 PRO has 12 workout programs for you to utilize at your disposal.
Heart Rate Sensors
As previously mentioned above, it’s important to receive data that pertains to your workout. This is largely achieved by monitoring your heart rate during your workouts. The heart rate sensors on an upright bike are distributed throughout the handlebars in front of you. As you now know, upright bikes remove the need for users to extend themselves and lean forward to reach the handlebars. Therefore, you can easily keep your hands glued to the handlebars to feed the data to the monitor without compromising on comfort.
As comfort is a key selling point of the upright bikes, having the ability to tweak your riding position to complete comfort is important. Having an adjustable seat allows you to customise your ride to your height and stride. It also allows other members of your family to use the bike as it accommodates for different heights and leg lengths. All of the bikes in our upright bike range here at JLL FITNESS have adjustable seating that you can take advantage of.
There are three types of resistance to look out for: Friction, magnetic and electromagnetic. On friction bikes; resistance is generated by applying cotton friction pads to the flywheel. Whereas magnetic resistance works by adjusting the distance of a series of magnets from the flywheel. The closer the magnets are to the flywheel, the greater the resistance. Both friction and magnetic resistance bikes are controlled by turning a knob to apply the resistance. The third resistance type, electro-magnetic, allows the magnetic brake to be controlled by the monitor. Both magnetic and electro-magnetic bikes provide a quieter ride and contribute to a smoother overall ride as there is no friction needed to slow down. The JF100 and JF150 are both great examples of magnetic upright bikes that deliver a quiet and smooth user experience
The flywheel weight of an exercise bike is an important factor that can determine the overall user experience. A heavier flywheel contributes to a more sturdy and smoother ride. With the JF Series you can choose from three different flywheel weights.
Transport and space
It’s important to be aware of how much space you have available to store your equipment. Having easily transportable equipment is ideal if you want to move it into different locations of your house. Make sure to check if the equipment has wheels either at the front or the back to aid you in doing this. The good news is that all of our upright bikes have transport wheels which makes transporting them a breeze.
