Say No to the Mobility Scooter and Yes to Rebuilding your Fitness Levels

There are several items on the market today that are designed to aid elderly people when they are out and about. There is a zimmer frame, the walking stick, a motorised wheelchair and the mobility scooter. Staying active can help prevent and the limit the use of such items especially the motorised aids. Once you start to use a mobility aid you will start to rely on it more and more and although it will give the illusion that it has offered you more freedom to leave the house in actual fact it is having a detrimental effect on your fitness levels.

The Benefits of walking

Instead of opting for a scooter why not try walking short distances to improve your fitness levels. Walking is a great cardio workout and it can help reduce the risk of heart diseases, Osteoporosis, and high blood pressure, Alzheimer’s and depression.
Walking for just ten minutes will boost the endorphins released into your blood stream easing stress, tension, anger, fatigue and confusion.
Regular walking can also help alleviate the pain of arthritis and lower back pain. Staying active will help rebuild strength in your joints and muscles giving you more independence than a mobility scooter.

Walking at home

A home Treadmill can help you to rebuild your fitness levels. It will take time to build up your confidence and endurance levels but just 30 minutes a day over 5 days will have a positive impact on your health and wellbeing.
If you are used to walking with the support of a zimmer frame or walking stick then the handrails on the frame of a treadmill will offer you the additional support you need. Using the handrails when walking can also alleviate the pressure put on your knees.
A treadmill is not just designed to be used for running it is also a great tool for walking. Using a treadmill in your home is a lot safer than walking outside as you do not have to worry about obstacles in your path or the effects of the winter weather. You can start off slow and as your confidence increases so can your speed.

Confident and ready to go

Always seek the advice of your Doctor or Physiotherapist before venturing outdoors too far, although you may feel you have the confidence to try walking outdoors can be more challenging than a treadmill. If you do not want to start walking on your own why not try contacting Age UK as they have volunteers that can take local walks with you.
