Handy Tips on How to Lay out Your Gym

 

The lay out of your gym is essential in getting people to stay a member. The last thing a gym goer wants, is to turn up to your gym only to find that they are sitting using the chest press, while the person next to them on the shoulder press is uncomfortably close – this can be extremely off-putting!

I know I’ve personally walked out of gyms and not looked back because of the layout, a lot of people are a little nervous when joining a new gym, and matters can be made worse when the cardio section for example is in full view of those going for a dip in the pool! Market Research World suggests that only 27% of gym members regularly go to the gym – the layout could well be the underlying problem.

1. Floor Planning and Equipment Layout

Now this is an essential part of ensuring your business is a success! There are lots of designs out there but one which has worked well in the past is a colour scheme, so dividing the layout into sectors – you could have your cardio section is one colour, your weights in another, swimming in another etc. This is really handy for when you make programme cards for your clients, you are able to colour code them and your gym looks good at the same time!

According to Sports England a typical health and fitness suite will consist of:

Sports England also say that ‘fitness suites should have a bright open design. Circulation should be clear and simple, long or narrow corridors should be avoided’.

Section one – Cardio – treadmill, cross trainer etc.
Section two – Strength – arm and leg machines, weights etc.
Section three – Floor exercises – wellness ball, abs roller crunch etc.
Section four– Swimming pool and spa facilities – sauna, steam room etc.

If classes such as yoga and spin are to take place then these can be in rooms around the gym. The classes should be near spa facilities because people do not want to be sitting in a calming and soothing yoga class only to hear the sounds of large weights being picked up and thrown down!

2. Good Ventilation

You must ensure air conditioning is in the right places, for example above the treadmill and cross trainer, the worst thing would be for a gym goer to start running on a hot summers day with no air con! Imagine that hot stuffy environment, people wouldn’t want to come back! Weights could be be placed by the window, to allow a cool breeze through.

3. Purchasing the Correct Equipment

Choosing what equipment to purchase can be quite challenging, but ensuring you have a variety of equipment throughout your gym is important, making sure you are working with the size you have, and maximising space.

4. Where to Place Your TVs

If you are having TVs in your gym then they need to be placed on the wall in front of the cardio equipment, such as treadmills, bikes and cross trainers, so that gym goers can watch TV while doing their routine.
